This movie is one of those star making or breaking
roles for eddie murphy. After the
disastrous movie "Pluto Nash" he really needed some thing to make him stand
out as a star again. Own Wilson is still flying high in hollywood and this
movie won't hurt him either way.
As it turns out this movie has alot going for it! So both stars and fans
should be happy with the result. The movie is a loose adaptation of a 1960's
buddy spy show. kinda. I can't claim to have ever seen
the show but I know thats where it gets the name and I've heard many people
my parents age mention
it as being one of those series that got it right. The movie in comparison
gets almost everything right.
The comedic timing is right on, the buddy relationship is something that
gets your interested even when
its poking fun at itself. Owen brings his same clumsy hero charisma with
him that he had in Shanghai
Noon and you can't help but laugh when the rest of the agency kinda beats
him down and constantly
compares him unfavorably to Carlos (think James Bond from Columbia).
Eddie Murphy makes a believable boxer too; which suprised me on a couple
of angels. He has both
the cocky eccentric millionar thing down at the same time as he makes you
believe he could be a very good boxer. Sure the plot is a little contrived
but its a buddy cop movie without the "cop" thing. A long
line of buddy cop movies have very contrived plots but still seem interesting
because of the chemistry
between the characters. Tango and Cash, The rookie, ect ect ect. This movie
also has going for it the cool spy gadget thing which come on.. you know
it... its half the reason most people go to see James
Bond movies over and over again. They also get lots of laughs off the
ineffective nature of Owens
second rate spy gadgets.
With a hilarious scene of line coaching using spy gear towards the middle
of the film its a solid comedy that will make some rip apart with laughter
while some will find it way to contrived to be enjoyable.
I hate those people. I can enjoy just about any movie but when its over I
know if it was a good movie or if I should soon expect a large drop in IQ.
This is a good movie. Not great. Not epic. Not a life
changing film but if your in the mood for something that combines 007
and Shanghai Noon then you'll
love this movie like I did.
